Jan Thaulow Nielsen creates tactile, atmospheric abstract paintings where bold textures, movement and light unfold into imagined worlds. Moving between abstraction and the familiar, his paintings often suggest landscapes, reflections, organic forms and places that seem to exist just beyond what we know.
Light has always been a driving force in his work, but beneath it lies something equally fundamental: a longing for what might exist on the other side. Earlier works often opened towards distant horizons, portals and passages. In his more recent paintings, the unknown has moved closer – into the surface, the material, the water and the light itself.
Working intuitively, Jan builds each painting layer by layer. He may begin with a direction, but allows the process to take over. Forms emerge, disappear and transform. What first appears to be rock may become something living. Light may become water. A landscape may dissolve into something that cannot quite be named.
The tactile surfaces are central to this process. Roughness meets softness, darkness meets light, and the familiar slips into something more ambiguous. These tensions often reflect something personal, even when Jan does not fully understand their meaning while painting.
For Jan, painting is not about arriving at an answer. It is about remaining open to what might be there – beyond the horizon, beneath the surface, or somewhere within.
